Fort Advocaten N.V. (“FORT”) is a Dutch law firm with offices next to the Vondelpark in the Oud-Zuid district of Amsterdam, the legal centre of The Netherlands. FORT’s lawyers litigate and advise their clients in the fields of Employment Law, Administrative Law, Insolvency Law, Corporate Law and Real Estate Law.
People occupy centre stage at FORT. We work towards the best possible result on that basis. We do so by listening carefully and handling each case on a no-nonsense basis. FORT has the edge over other law firms.
Our lawyers have a broad area of interest and keep abreast of any new developments that may be relevant to your case. By taking specialist courses and showing a keen interest in your sector, one of our lawyers is always perfectly suited to handle your case.
We favour short lines of communication. One contact in your business is ultimately responsibility for your case. That way you always know exactly what you are up against and we are able to give you all the assistance you need throughout the process. This makes the process both pleasant and efficient.
FORT likes to invest in long-term relationships with its clients. We jointly go in search of effective solutions. Our lawyers are known for their vigour, fighting spirit and expertise. That mentality has earned us an excellent reputation.
Vision and Core Values
We observe a number of core values at FORT. We want to make a difference. We firmly believe in providing high quality at competitive rates, showing guts and operating with efficiency and involvement. To be truly successful it is important to think out of the box. We go in search of the limits of the law to generate a maximum return in your case. Necessity knows no law.
An apt comparison, in our opinion. Joost van den Vondel was known as a sharp-tongued poet; we also like to operate on the edge. His poetry is often ruthless and plain-spoken. He was one of the leading opinion makers and agitators of his time.

Fort Advocaten was established at the end of the 70s, operating at that time as Steinz & Van der Veen, a full-service Amsterdam law firm focusing on the media practice.
Steinz & Van der Veen laid the foundation stone for FORT as we know it now. Many years have passed and a great deal has changed since then. As new lawyers joined the firm, it outgrew its premises on ’t Singel and moved to Prins Hendriklaan, where it continued to expand. Pieter Twaalfhoven joined the firm as a trainee and Rob IJsendijk as an associate, both in 1992, the year in which the New Dutch Civil Code was introduced.
After some time it became apparent that the building on Prins Hendriklaan was also too small. In 1993 the firm moved to a beautiful building at Koningslaan 60. An excellent location, where the firm modestly occupied only the left part of the building at first.
That same year Ton Steinz left and Frits Kemp joined the firm. It soon became apparent that Rob, Pieter and Frits got on extremely well together. They shared the same views on the firm’s future and the approach to be taken: “the future is in specialisation”. The Hulkenberg Van der Veen partnership was born. It soon grew into an informal, stimulating, dynamic and successful law firm with a broad practice, focusing on corporate law and property.
It also continued to advise its clients in the field of employment law, trademark law and intellectual property law. Many colourful, well-known and lesser-known figures found their way to Koningslaan. The firm initially employed two trainee lawyers, but over a period of four years gradually grew into a law firm with some 20 lawyers.
The name was changed to FORT, an acronym, and the firm continued to expand. In 2004 Katinka M. Verdurmen joined the former male bastion as a partner. Terry Steffens was appointed partner from within the firm in 2007, while Marco Meijer joined as a partner in 2009. In 2010 the legal structure was changed into a public limited liability company and Berth Brouwer joined as a shareholder.
